CHARACTER INFORMATION

NAME: Sha Gojyo (Possessed by Unabara no Akemi)
CANON: Saiyuki

CANON REFERENCE: Here you go!

CANON POINT: Saiyuki Reload Blast Manga Shot 5. “Training Arc 1” - Three weeks after his first fight against the War God Nataku, while recovering at The High Priest Sharak Sanzo’s temple. After getting bombarded and losing a fight against the God-Envoy Sai Tai Sai.

CRAU HISTORY:
Gojyo arrived at Jigoku-Cho after dealing with the third shrine incident in Slumscape. Because of this, he had been possessed by a native youkai to that world. The mask he keeps attached to his hip is a physical manifestation of Unibara no Akari, the soul of an Umabie whose soul shares space with his body. For that reason, Gojyo is more or less one and a half youkai in an outwardly human-looking trenchcoat. A hanyou halfbreed combined with a whole youkai soul. Due to this fact, his body had managed to endure some physical changes over his time in Hakagemachi. Bearing scattered scales along his back, arms, and legs, he also possesses gills along his neck and ribs, making him capable of surviving long periods in water without issue. He also seems to have fin-like webbing between his fingers and toes and fin-like ears.

Unabara No Akari is an older umabie spirit who had spent her days guarding and bestowing good fortune upon a small coastal town. As the years passed, Unabara's shrine had slowly become forgotten, and her memory was disregarded by the people who meant the most to her. The years of neglect had made her bitter and jaded towards humans with time, a somewhat vain creature at heart. Although Unabara's relationship with Gojyo was strained in the beginning due to Gojyo's half-human blood and his correspondence with the Onmyouji, she had slowly begun to warm up to him during their months together. Initially quiet at first, Unabara has grown surprisingly soft for the younger half-youkai's antics over time.

Gojyo also had a small handful of other people within the realm that greatly impacted him. He formed a flirty yet cautious friendship between Emily Dyer and her youkai Hibiki. He took on a protective older brother role for various teenagers, such as Utsume, Jin Ling, Eugene, and Soo-Won. And somehow, he developed a strange familial friendship with Jin Guangyao.

Gojyo played the part of the assertive yet curious and headstrong investigator during his time in Hakagemachi. Gojyo's experience with the world of youkai and their magic was a surprisingly helpful tool for the investigations of the water shrine. His protective nature caused him to collect a large majority of the artifacts that were important to the lake spirits human side (And yet, alas, he did not find an essential one.)

Gojyo's time in Hakagemachi ended just as time was rewound for the city, bringing all of the world's outsiders to a time where the town was most prominent. Only, as this happened, their youkai spirits began to take full possession over them—a situation which caused Gojyo to fully be taken over by his youkai for the first time.

Immediately after this experience, he found himself waking up in Jogoku-Cho.

AGE: 24

APPEARANCE:

Standing at about 184cm (6'1") and 75.3 kg (160lbs), Gojyo is a tall, well-toned, and long-limbed young man. His long crimson hair and eyes are symbols of his status as a hanyou (half-youkai). His body is toned due to his years of front-line combat and survival. His most distinguishing traits are the two long scars across his left cheek, a reminder of surviving the abuse he went through when he was younger and something he often tries to cover up by growing his hair out. He also has eyelashes much longer than any natural human and two distinctive strands of hair that tend to stray from the rest. They tend to look very similar to a bug's antenna and are the primary source of the many 'water cockroach' jokes that his friends back home toss at him. He has tattoo-like marking on the back of his neck that looks similar to a water gourd in design, a signature trait of his youkai blood.

Being possessed by another youkai during his time in Slumscape, he has physically developed some of her traits. Blue iridescent scales are scattered across his body, stemming from the base of his neck just beneath his marking and going down his back. They spread over Gojyo's shoulders, his ribs, across the back of his arms, and outside his thighs. He also has gills along his neck and around his rib cage. Fin-like webbing stretches between his fingers and toes, and his nails are pointed and claw-like.

In terms of Gojyo's wardrobe, he is most often seen wearing a loose-fitting grey hakama. Something he had gotten for himself from the kimono-shop worker in Slumscape to better fit in with Hakagemachi's environment.

CONTRACT PAYMENT:

((CW; SPOILERS FOR AFTER VOLUME 3 Of SAIYUKI RELOAD BLAST HIGHLIGHT IN ORDER TO VIEW))

I want to give him an attempt to prevent the untimely death of his older half-brother, Dokugakuji.

This incentive, of course, will make him aware of the death of his half-brother, which he is not the current canon. This payment will give him other incentives and emotional vulnerabilities in which to grow through and develop as a character during his time in Jigoku-Cho.

QUESTIONNAIRE:
Your Faction leader, not just your boss but the leader, has asked you to carry out a hit. The target is a non-affiliated public leader, well-liked by the people of the city. Do you carry it out? Why or why not?
    "Depends on the situation.
I won't lie to you; it ain't like I've got a problem taking a life. I've taken out more unfortunate bastards in my time than I can count. Hell, back in Shangri-La, I wouldn't be alive if I didn't kill. And I'm not ever going to regret fucking living. Not any more.
In the end, I do gotta know why this guy is so well-liked, and what he did that's so fucking bad that he has to go.
I've got two general rules to live by, and it's kept me going this long.
    Ah? What are they?
'I ain't on nobody's side but my own' and 'I won't kill kids' of course.
Now that isn't an insult or threat to you, boss-man. As far as I'm aware, we've got our reasons for doing things pretty lined up, and I've got every reason to do what you need me to.
But that being said, I don't live for anyone else's sake but my own, and I'm not one to do something stupid like risking myself for no fucking reason. But I'm not going to hurt someone who did nothing wrong unless I have some damn good incentive for it. And I won't do anything to make a kid or pretty woman cry.

Well, not unless the pretty woman is going to hurt me first. And I don't mean in a fun way. I'm pickier with my women than you'd think."

How do you react to betrayal? How severe must a betrayal be for you to consider it such?
"Truthfully? The world is full of betrayal. If anything, I'm pretty damn used to it at this point.
True loyalty is a fucking sham, as far as I'm aware. We're all placed here on this good earth with our damn incentives and reasons for doing things. When your incentives line up, you're in cahoots. If they don't, anyone will do what they have to fulfill their needs.
I'm not some bright-eyed and bushy-tailed dumbass who doesn't realize that just about anyone can betray you at any second.
But that also means it doesn't hit me as hard when it happens. I get it. You did what was right for you. And now it's my turn to act in response and do the same, yeah?
As they say, no hard feelings and all that bullshit.
And no, it doesn't matter how extreme the situation is. It isn't going to change anything. I've had some of the closest people in my life turn on me and hold me at fucking gunpoint to get what they needed. Did I get upset over it? Well, I guess it hurt when it was happening. But when you think about it in the long run, you realize they're just doing their own thing to survive and get what they want in the world. That's how things are.
Hell, even I've up and left people high and dry when traveling with them didn't fit what I wanted. Shit like that happens.
You have to appreciate the good times with those people when you have them. Cause that's what's important, you know?"

An oni of the Shuten Clan has gone completely berserk and is going on a violent rampage through the city. You can't stop him, but you CAN lead him elsewhere, but you only have two choices: a road by a discotheque with a large crowd in front, or the nearby park that you do not know is unoccupied and may have children present. What do you choose, and why?
"Man, it's a tough decision, but I'm going to have to go with the park on this one. I mean, it makes more sense. Take it somewhere that would have a lot of space with few buildings and nowhere near as many people as there are in the streets? It would damn well mean way less death and destruction, yeah? Of course, even if there are people there, I'd be more than happy enough to keep that oni preoccupied with my time, yeah? Why go after those loser weaklings when you got a damn fine piece right here ready to fight, right?
I mean, I'm probably not faster than the oni. At least, not fast enough to warn anyone or anything. But I'm charming, and I know my way with my hands if you know what I mean. ♥
Ah, right. You never mentioned if the oni was hot or not? Is the oni hot?
    No?
Well, then I'll keep doing my thing with insults instead of compliments.
I should at least be distracting enough to give people time to get the hell out of there.
And if they don't get out well, that's their fault for being fucking stupid, right?
What can I say? I'm durable and experienced. I'm sure the oni will have plenty of fun with me."

An enemy of your faction has asked for a meeting, proposing a truce of sorts to deal with a more significant threat. There is indeed a threat, but this person double-crossing you is just as likely an outcome. Do you agree to the meeting? Do you trust them?
"Guess it depends on the type of relationship we've previously had with our enemy.
If they haven't garnered any respect in my book, then fuck them. I'll find my way around the issue without them.
But if they're all right, people outside the whole faction thing, I suppose I could spare the time to grace them with my presence. Hell, it might even be fun going for an excellent ol' double-team, yeah? A little bit of you, and a little bit of me, a little bit of this giant 'scary threat'. It sounds like a party.
I mean, think about it. Despite everything, this other faction had the guts to drop their pride to approach us, yeah? That means that even if their plan is shit, they at least deserve a little respect.
Enemies, friends, what truly matters, in the end, are how big your balls are. I have dealt with this exact situation more than enough times for my liking.
I guess you can say I'm an experienced pro when mixing and mingling fighting partners.
    And partners in crime.
    And bedroom partners.
Oh right, we were talking about fighting.
But like I said, I'm not going to team up with just anyone. Whoever it has to be respectable people, you know? And at least good-looking. Otherwise, they will not hear the end of it from me. And I have to agree with their reasoning behind it.
I'm not a team player. My friends back home can probably vouch for that, but if it works out for all of us, then I don't see a problem."

POWERS & ABILITIES:
Because Gojyo comes from a CRAU of Slumscape, where he lost many of his natural youkai capabilities, his abilities are a little different than how they are from his canon. He no longer has a mental link with his weapon, the chain-linked monks' spade, Shakujo. Much to his dismay. That being said, he has slowly been gaining Unabara No Akari's capabilities throughout his time under her possession.

I hope that as the game continues, he can get back both his original capabilities and grow on Unabara No Akari's powers as an Amabie. Both their skills will be listed as follows:

Shakujo's Curse - In his original canon Gojyo has been cursed by a magical spirit within a monks spade that he calls "Shakujo". It's a spirit, in turn, that is entwined with his own until the day he dies. It can appear and disappear out of thin air when in full power. It can also repair itself upon being damaged when he makes it vanish. Last but not least, he has a mental bond formed with the weapon where he can telepathically control the direction of the detachable sickle no matter which way he swings it. He lost mental connection with his Shakujo upon showing up in Slumscape, though, and has for the time being just been carrying it around like a normal weapon.

Supernatural Senses- Both Gojyo and Unabara No Akari have a natural ability to sense out a person's qi due to their youkai nature. They can usually, through it, tell if someone is human or otherwise, the general feel of their strength and capabilities and if their intentions are malicious or not. This ability will be completely nerfed during the beginning of the game and will develop back to its original strength as the game continues.

Enhanced Strength - A natural ability due to Gojyo's status as a hanyou. It has been shown throughout canon that Gojyo is strong enough that he can crush skulls with his bare hands and knock down large solid stone pillars with a single kick. He is strong enough that even full-blooded youkai tend to fear him in his canon. Earning him a position within the world-infamous Sanzo party where he often, alongside Goku, works as the brute muscle of the team. At the beginning of the game, his capabilities will be nerfed considerably, and he will only have the strength of an average human of his size and stature.

Enhanced Strength (Artifact)- A blue gem that was granted to Gojyo by the Shrine Gods in Slumscape that he wears around his neck. Due to how many times he had prayed to the gods, it can increase whatever strength he has at the moment by triple the amount. Upon entering the game, it will be nerfed and will only be unlockable through rewards. Until then, it is just a regular-looking necklace.

Glow- A power granted to Gojyo through Unabara No Akari. With this capability, his skin can glow a bright fluorescent light. Almost like a human lighthouse! Of course, being an embarrassing ability, this will be one of the first ones I try to win back for him. But for now, like all other youkai abilities, it will be nerfed completely and only gained through rewards.

Water Breathing- A physical skill gained by Gojyo's possession by Unabara No Akari. As his body began to change with his time spent in Hakagemachi, he began to gain some of Unabara's traits as an Amabie. One of those traits was functioning gills along his neck and ribs. This skill will be accessible immediately within the game as it is a physical trait of Gojyo's.

Luck- A Natural skill of the Amabie, enhanced in turn by the boons Gojyo has requested from the shrine spirits during his time in Hakagemachi. He can quickly find places to eat easily, he makes money quickly, and items are more likely to pop up to his aid. In combination with Unabara No Akari's other skills, he's also able to occasionally find small puddles that are miraculously deeper only for him, like a dimensional portal of sorts. It gives him a temporary respite from occasional dangerous situations. (Only happens about 20% of the time, though) This skill will be considerably nerfed as he enters Jigoku-Cho, only giving him a temporary improved success rate with his sleight of hand capabilities. Gojyo will regain any other luck abilities throughout the game.

Protection (Artifact)- A paper talisman that Gojyo keeps tucked within his robes that he gained from the Shrine Spirits in Hakagemachi. He had it blessed two times over by them, so it is slightly more resilient than the average talisman. It can passively protect and ward away and intentionally malicious spirits and youkai as long as their power isn't too strong. At the beginning of this game, it will be nerfed and only give Gojyo a slightly more intimidating aura to anyone who means to harm him. Gojyo will unlock any of its other capabilities as he progresses through the game.

Healing- Due to his capabilities as a hanyou as well as Unabara No Akari's abilities. It only works towards himself to include being able to keep sickness and disease away and heal a little faster than most normal humans. Since these are all minor healing abilities based on his physicality and should do little save for making him slightly more resilient, they will be kept in full capacity.

Healing (Artifact)-An unpolished metal ring with a yellow stone that was given to him by the Shrine Gods in Hakagemachi. He can heal minor cuts, scrapes, and bruises. This artifact will be completely nerfed until he progresses through the game.

Pacify (Artifact)- A wooden trinket that Gojyo has attached to his obi, which keeps Unabara No Akari's will calm enough so that she doesn't maliciously harm him. Since this doesn't affect the game save for his relationship with the youkai possessing him, this will remain fully capable.

Defense (Artifact)- A small cuff made from polished tortoiseshell that Gojyo received from the shrine gods in Hakagemachi. It makes him ever so slightly more durable to physical attacks. It will be completely nerfed until he progresses through the game.

Farm Spirits Blessing- Due to getting on the good side of the Farm Spirit in Hakagemachi, Gojyo has a weak defense to magical attacks. Despite his youkai's water affiliation, he is mainly a little less weak to fire. This ability will keep nerfed until he continues to progress through the game.

Transformation- Due to his possession and spiritual connection to Unabara No Akari, Gojyo's body can morph and change the stronger his connection with Unabara is. Much of the time, this transformation isn't controllable and is more a display of her spirit fully taking over his body. Once near the end of his time in Slumscape, she had even managed to take him over completely, turning him into a full Amabie both in appearance and ability. At the start of this game, this will be nerfed completely and will be one of the last things I regain for him as he progresses.

SUITABILITY:
I won't lie. I specifically am bringing Gojyo into Jigoku-Cho from Slumscape because I feel he would be a perfect fit for this game's setting. Gojyo is a man who would practically be in his element.

(cw; Incest, Sex Work, Pedophilia & Child Abuse)

Growing up as a hanyou, Gojyo spent most of the younger half of his life around youkai more than he ever had humans. His full-youkai stepmother and half-brother raised him. And even after he left home, he spent most of his teenage and early adult years among parts of society primarily inhabited by youkai. Even in the most recent canon, Gojyo feels a more substantial relation to the youkai half of his heritage than the human side. Despite the stigmatization he had received by some youkai, many of them tended to accept him far more than most humans had.

As for the seedy lifestyle of Jigoku-Cho well, Gojyo grew up with a rough childhood. What little family life he knew was riddled with abuse from his stepmother, who saw him as a representation of her husbands' infidelity. The only thing that would stop his stepmother's physical assault was when his older half-brother Jien would distract her by allowing her to sleep with him. In that way, both Sha boys were damaged in very different ways. And the abuse could only last so long.

It was when Gojyo was twelve that his stepmother almost killed him. Holding an ax over him as he cried, his brother realized nothing could distract her from her assaults any longer. And so Sha Jien did the only thing he could think of and stabbed his mother from behind with a knife, killing her instantly. Unable to deal with the shock of killing his mother, Sha Jien then left the house, abandoning Gojyo altogether. At this point in his life, Sha Gojyo had to learn to live independently, taking to the streets to survive.

He made it by scavenging through alleys and learning to protect himself physically against anyone who meant harm to him. And as he hit the age of 15, he was taken in by a small youkai-dominant city gang. Here he learned to fight professionally, gamble professionally, and even how to flirt professionally. Often he would make a living by stealing for his crew, cheating at gambling (his games of choice being Mah Jong and Poker), swindling, and occasionally seducing more affluent women as a kept-boy. These things would keep a roof over his head, his bed warm, and his stomach full. Some years later, he and his partner-in-crime Banri had managed to trick an older man out of his home through pressuring debt upon him, giving the two of them their own little personal hideout in the woods.

The two of them lived together for some time until Banri had to skip town due to accidentally sleeping with a crime boss's wife. Afterward, Gojyo lived on his own for about six months until he randomly ran across a guy dying in the middle of the street. Feeling a little spontaneous, Gojyo picked the guy up, stuffed his guts back in, and took him to his place to nurse him back to health.

Little did Gojyo know that he saved the life of a serial killer, the man slaughtered the centipede clan, and human turned youkai, Cho Gonou. Not realizing he was harboring a wanted criminal, they lived peacefully together until a priest arrived at his door one day with attempts to take Gonou into custody. Gojyo liked this guy at this point, so what if he had a body count in the thousands? He found him relatable.

Despite his fighting off the priest, though, Gonou was inevitably captured. He managed to plea a deal and have his life spared in his detainment, being placed into full custody by the priest that found him. His name changed to Cho Hakkai. He and Gojyo then spent the next few years doing underhanded work for the Buddhist Temples under the monks' order, dealing with situations that affected the priesthood where they could not otherwise interfere directly.

It was at this point that Banri came back. Finding Hakkai was now living in their home; he tried to get Hakkai and Gojyo on a side gig involving some petty thievery. Initially wary about the gig, they both turned him down. It wasn't until they got a knock on a door by some local thugs asking for Gojyo by name that they were involved. For it seemed Banri was double-dealing while stealing from the gang he was working for, pocketing some of the wares he stole for himself. The band, furious as they should be, decided to off Banri only for Banri to plea a deal with them. Hold his best man, Gojyo, as a hostage while he goes to return the wares. Gojyo agreed to the contract and sat in place for Banri, tied up to a chair in a seedy basement as Banri went off to fix things.

Of course, this gave Banri the perfect opportunity to skip town and leave Gojyo high and dry. Truthfully, Gojyo suspected that that was what he'd do. And, with the low self-esteem that Gojyo had, he didn't think much about the gun barrel pointed at his head as he laughed at the gang members for their stupidity.

It was a good thing that he made friends with a killer.

Hakkai, the nosy man he was, took the opportunity to barge into the hangout and save Gojyo by killing every other person down there—in turn, taking back what stolen goods they could find, returning them to the nearby temples for profit.

A few years later, the Minus Wave hit. It was a war that would cause the tipping point in tensions between the youkai and humans in their world. Technically not belonging to either side of the conflict, Hakkai and Gojyo teamed up with the priest looking over them as he was given an order to travel far to the west and stop those who visited the conflict. Since then, Gojyo has survived through the war by his means, acting as a protection for the priest; it was him and his other not-quite-human, not quite-youkai companions that paved the path in blood, not afraid to reach their location by any means necessary.

And so he and his crew gained a name for themselves: the infamous Sanzo-party, a horrifying band of monsters who leave piles of bodies wherever they go. Since the start of his journey, Gojyo has grown desensitized to killing, often known as the group's messiest fighter, using his shakujo to slice, cut up, and dismember anybody who dared oppose him.

Would you believe he's one of the protagonists?

FACTION SUITABILITY:
The Shuten Clan- What can Gojyo say? Before he started that stupid journey westward, teetering along the edge of organized crime was his entire life. He made a living off of gambling and keeping debts. Swindling and laundering money were daily activities for him. And he understands full well the importance of loyalty to those he feels deserve it. He is also an insanely skilled fighter with a history of being hired muscle that was not afraid to get his hands dirty. Sometimes people need good roughhousing to be productive. Sometimes people need more than a little roughhousing to keep their noses to themselves. And it wasn't as if Gojyo didn't know how to both respect and enjoy a good party when he saw one.

The only way I can see this clan not working out for him would be his 'me before we' mindset. He had spent most of his life learning how to live and survive for himself, and due to that, he isn't afraid to follow his own beliefs and opinions on situations. He will be the one to question things occasionally and turn against orders if he believes they're stupid enough.

The Tamamo Clan- What can he say? Gojyo has always been a man of earthly desires. And when he wasn't gambling his way to success, he often found cute women who would keep him for the night. He understands seduction skills, knowing and understanding the implications of selling his body to survive from an early age. But that being said, he most certainly doesn't hate the lifestyle. Flirty and surprisingly empathetic to the people around him, he is an experienced young man who knows how to flaunt himself in just the right ways.

That being said, 'traditional work' is not Gojyo's strong suit, and if he were to end up in the Tamamo clan, it would most certainly be within the red light industry rather than with the inns or restaurants. Menial labor tends to lose his interest quickly, and he is usually quick to mess up and lose his job over it. (The last time he tried, he attempted to seduce a waitress he worked with who happened to be already seeing the restaurant's owner at the time).

The Sutoku Clan- If Gojyo understands anything, it is what it's like to suffer as an underdog. Often being related to a kappa or water sprite and being actively possessed by an Amabie, Gojyo would be a strong aide for the Sutoku Clan if just for his capabilities in handling most water-based environments, primarily in the utility section. Gojyo's heritage as a half-blooded youkai is also far more likely to be accepted among a bunch of fellow outliers than by any other group of youkai. He is exceptionally experienced in matters of entertainment and gaming as well. And he has a natural skill when it comes to handling numbers and understands how to manage debts.

That being said, Gojyo is not a traditionally educated man. Because of that, things like paperwork or filing would go far above him and bore him out of his mind. He is also not the most forward-thinking person and doesn't carry wisdom in any traditional sense. More, he knows his life experiences. And the clan's more conventional values will most certainly get a few vocal complaints out of him.

The Department of The Enma- Gojyo is a surprisingly strong-willed and moral man despite his very untraditional way of living. He understands what it means to fight against those who abuse their power to defend the weak. But he is not afraid to defy the straight and narrow path. An ex-swindler himself, he has a talent for bending others' wills in a strong enough way to get them to do as he asks. His physical strength and skill in intimidation will prove beneficial for the peacekeepers or patrol officers.

That being said, Gojyo is not an orderly man by any means. Adhering to the stringent rules of others usually tends to make him wish to do the opposite. He is very much a free thinker and rebel at heart, it will take some effort to keep him on the right path, and he will need damn good incentive to do what others tell him to. Considering his old days as an outlaw and deviant, he naturally tells those in power to kindly 'fuck themselves' regularly. So it would more or less depend on those in power and their capability of handling his attitude and teamwork problems.
